Gibson Console Grande (late 1940s – early 1950s) The limitations of chord shapes imposed by the use of the steel slide (or “tone bar”) led to the addition of multiple necks, resulting in the console steel guitar. Variations of this tripleneck 8-string model were in Gibson’s line from the late 1930s up until the 1960s and were available with seven- or eight-string necks. A doubleneck Console Grande was famously used by the late Don Helms on many of Hank Williams Sr.’s classic recordings. In order to expand the tonal capabilities of the lap steel guitar, the Gibson Guitar Corporation introduced a system of pedals to change the tuning of the strings on one of their console steels beginning in 1940. This instrument, the Electraharp, had a cluster of pedals radiating from its left rear leg that operated similarly to the pedals on a harp. Alvino Rey was an early player of the Electraharp but the model was discontinued because of World War II and only came back on the market for a short time after the war. Loaned to the Museum of Making Music by Ben Elder, Guitar Writer and Historian stairway 2... i am not satisfied with this photo... the titlted angle of the fingerboard doesn?t convince me... but I like it enough to share.
